Thyroid Diseases Update
Immune Mediated Thyroiditis is being diagnosed more frequently. A part of the reason is increased awareness and also improved testing. Dr. Jean Dodds has done a tremendous amount of research on this condition and developed more reliable testing.
Immune thyroid disease will eventually lead to the classic signs of hypothyroidism in the dog. The classic signs of hypothyroidism in dogs are lethargy, weight gain, poor hair coat, sensation of cold (the animal looks for warm places) and reduced exercise tolerance.
Dr. Dodds studies show that the standard testing for thyroid disease, the measurement of T4 and TSH in the blood does not show positive until most of the thyroid gland has become dysfunctional.
There can be many other symptoms as seizures, hyper-activity, aggression, chronic skin issues, neuropathies and reproductive problems etc linked to thyroid disorders.
After many educational seminars and updates from Dr. Dodds, Tree of Life Veterinary Care now does the 5 panel thyroid test for dogs suspected of thyroid disorders.
